Coming out of winter many are starting to think “summer body” and may begin to wonder whether our short workouts will help with weight loss….
Well…… a study conducted by Scientists in Copenhagen found that exercising 30 minutes a day resulted in more significant weight loss than exercising for 60 minutes a day.
At Square Box Fitness, we focus on fitness foremost and acknowledge that weight loss is a healthy by-product for some.
In the Copenhagen study, 61 healthy, overweight, sedentary Danish men aged 20-40 took part in a 13-week exercise program. The researchers looked at the relationship between increasing exercise duration and subsequent weight loss.
The results went against the weight-loss industry mantra of “eat less – move more.” Without changing diet, the 60-minute program burning 600 calories, resulted in less body fat loss than the 30-minute 300-calorie program. Why?
The participants in the 60-minute group reported feeling exhausted and felt hungrier for the rest of the day. However, the 30-minute group felt less hungry and more energized for the day.
What of our 9 minutes to fitness program? Michael Joyner, M.D., an exercise researcher at the Mayo Clinic, advises; even a 5-to-10 minute workout, if done consistently, will improve fitness, mental wellbeing and ultimately lead to better food choices and weight loss for anyone.
The take-home message is – consistent exercise every day keeps the scales at bay!
