Having lots of choice may seem beneficial in many situations, but it can lead to an inability to choose compared to a set of limited options.
In 2000, Sheena Iyengar and Mark Lepper set up an experiment that compared jam sales between a display of 24 different kinds of jams and a display of only 6 types of jam. The results showed that people presented with only 6 choices were 10 times more likely to buy jam than those who had 24 to choose from.
In the experiment it became clear that when people are faced with too much choice, the fear of making the wrong choice is paralysing.
Fitness Choice
We can draw parallels to these results and the concept of fitness. There are seemingly endless options for exercise, goals to set and workouts to do… The overwhelming choice leads to fear and avoidance of exercise completely.
I have noted that a significant reason people don’t exercise is that they don’t know what they should do, how to exercise safely and when. There are so many choices, conflicting opinions, and miss-information out there that people feel incapable of making the right exercise choice.
Less is more
It’s therefore important to have an exercise professional outline a few simple exercises that can be done safely, thereby removing the burden of making “the” choice. Rarely in fitness is more options for exercise a better a choice. Fitness requires action in exercising consistently.
Limiting choice is the most significant benefit of a prescribed program such as ours, it eliminates the anxiety of what exercises to do, or not do, to get fit. Then getting fitter is easy – just follow the program!
